- Geologic Road Logs of the Ouray Area
This wire-bound anthology on heavy duty coated paper tells everything related to Ouray area geology, minerals, mines, mining history, roads, and topography including 1:24000 scale topo maps of the areas covered. It even shows the surface and sub-surface layout of the mines relative to the veins that were being tapped. Excellent source of information. The copy I bought in Ouray had been signed by the author, George E. Moore. Ouray County Historical Society (2004), ISBN 0-9747932-0-5.
- GTR Mapping
You can't do better than GTR's Topographic Recreational Maps for a state-size map that's detailed enough to use for backroads. They're larger and more detailed than typical highway maps, but not as cumbersome as Geological Survey maps, and they're accurate. They're available for the Rocky Mountain states and you'll find them at some gas stations.
- Guide to Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails
Guide to Moab, UT Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails
Two good 4x4 guides describing 65 Colorado trails and 50 Moab trails. Each rates the trails according to Easy, Moderate, and Difficult, giving brief but accurate information about length, trail condition and obstacles, directions, and showing a few pictures and a useable map of each trail. I found them to be useful for motorcycling as well. Both by Charles A. Wells. FunTreks, Inc. ISBN 0-9664976-0-0 for Colorado (1998). ISBN 0-9664976-2-7 for Moab (2000).
- Map of the Mountains of Silverton, Telluride and Ouray
Waterproof, folding topo-relief map at 1:6000 scale. If you only buy one map of the Ouray area for backroads, it should be this one. Drake Mountain Maps (1997 rev. 2002).
- National Geographic Trails Illustrated Maps
Waterproof topographic trail maps more detailed than GTR maps but not covering whole states.  I used the Moab North and Moab South maps and found them to be good.  Also available for Yellowstone and Telluride/Silverton,Ouray/Lake City.  I wish I'd known about the latter during my last Ouray trip.
- 8,000 Miles of Dirt: A backroad travel guide to Wyoming
This book turned out to be dead weight during my Wyoming trip, since I preferred my GTR map. As reading to prepare for the ride, however, it was excellent material. Dan Lewis (1992), Endeavor Books, Casper, WY, ISBN 0-941875-16-4.
- The Geology of the Parks, Monuments, and Wildlands of Southern Utah
Highly recommended for anybody who wants to understand the Colorado Plateau. Did you know the Henry and La Sal Mountains were once sub-surface blisters of magma? Ever wonder how you could ride up in elevation through progressively older layers of strata? Author Robert Fillmore shines a light without "dumbing it down". I like it so much I have two copies, one for my house and one in my truck. University of Utah Press (2000), ISBN 0-87480-652-6.
- The Lonely Planet travel survival kit book series
These well-organized, very complete travel books have everything you need, short of detailed maps. I've used the Rocky Mountain States and Southwest editions. Lonely Planet Publications, Oakland, CA, ISBN 0-86442-241-5, and, 0-86442-255-5, respectively.
