Illinois Street Registration for Converted Dirt Bike
The Baja kit included registration instructions for the state of Illinois, but they were incorrect. The individuals in the named office did not know how to proceed, but they did help me find the right contact. The starting point is Inspector Gerdes of the Illinois State Police, Vehicle Inspection unit, at 2719 S. 11th Street in Springfield.
- Contact Inspector Gerdes at 217-557-2084 and arrange for an inspection of your bike. In my case I trucked it to Springfield, but there may be alternatives - ask Inspector Gerdes. The state should have issued you an off-road vehicle title at the time of your purchase. You will need to have this with you at the inspection.
- Inspector Gerdes will complete a form indicating that the vehicle has been inspected and is road-worthy, if, of course, you pass the inspection. You will also need your drivers license with motorcycle endorsement.
- Take the form and your title to the drivers license facility, in the Michael J. Howlett building at Edwards & 2nd St. South, in Springfield. Use the S.W. door.
- At the drivers license facility you'll complete forms to change your title and to register your vehicle and get plates. The title change costs $65 and the plates cost $38. The title change and registration can also be done at regional offices. They may not understand the process though, so you may as well do it in Springfield.
- Bolt on your plate and hit the street. Your new title will be mailed to you.
